ASBESTOS ABATEMENT

With a combined experience of over 50 years in the asbestos abatement industry, NewRoads Environmental is a valuable resource for building owners, facility managers, architects, engineers and general contractors. Our extensive knowledge of this highly regulated industry allows NewRoads to apply a variety of innovative solutions and applications that deliver value, reliability and safety to clients and workers.  NewRoads Environmental is accustomed to working in occupied spaces and has the flexibility to meet challenging schedules and deadlines by utilizing state of the art equipment and experienced crews. It is critical to have a partner to help navigate the process of identifying, planning and remediating these highly regulated materials.

To serve our clients more efficiently and reduce their overall liability, NewRoads Environmental now transports asbestos waste generated from a project site using our own in-house resources. This further minimizes a client’s risk by removing the sub-contracted waste hauler our competition is forced to use. Custom designed 40 cubic-yard containers - constructed above industry standards with reinforced walls and watertight gaskets - are placed on each project and transported to our waste disposal facilities via our own equipment.  NewRoads can manage the complete life cycle of our client’s waste generated on a project from identification through abatement and disposal, a differentiator for our team.

COMMERCIAL LEAD PAINT REMOVAL

Lead in paint has been highly publicized over the last few years. NRE and its employees receive extensive training on the hazards and safety associated with working around lead paint. NRE offers a full range of lead abatement services ranging from chemical stripping to abrasive blasting. NRE assures the safe and efficient removal of lead paints in non-residential buildings.

We also specialize in sand blasting a wide range of items ranging from structural steel, I-beams, trusses, equipment, fabricated steel structures, pressure vessels, bulk storage tanks, silos, bridges, plus numerous other commercial and industrial items.

Sandblasting removes rust, mill scale, old coatings, and contamination in preparation for a high performance coating. We can abrasive blast (sandblast) steel, iron, copper, brass, aluminum and glass. We can achieve profiles from 0.5 mils to 5 mils deep. We abrasive blast (sand blast) new or old materials, remove rust, paints, stains and glues. We are able to offer all blasting levels from SSPC-SP5 white metal blasting, to SSPC-SP7 brush-off blast cleaning, depending upon the requirements of the client and the chosen paint coating system. There are numerous types of abrasive media than can be used during the blasting process these include glass beads, ground glass, aluminum oxide, black beauty slag, steel grit, steel shot, corn cob and walnut shells — each possessing unique benefits and features.

NewRoads Environmental is also experienced in using dry ice as a blasting media. Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2). With dry ice blasting, soft CO2 pellets approximately the size of grains of sugar are propelled toward surfaces at supersonic speeds to safely remove paint and contamination. The dry ice, although hard in appearance, does not rely on its abrasive properties for effective cleaning. When the dry ice pellets hit target surfaces, it causes a process called thermo-shock. As the substrate temperature decreases, it becomes brittle, enabling the dry ice particle to break up failed paint and surface contamination. The benefit of using dry ice is that the CO2 quickly dissipates into the gas carbon dioxide, so there is very little blast residue to clean up — only the failed paint film or removed contamination. We recently used dry ice to clean fire damage from a 2,000,000 sf research facility bring the facility back to research standards.

DISASTER RECOVERY

NewRoads Environmental was one of the first responders in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. NRE immediately responded to clients’ needs with over 100 men and associated equipment. NRE was pumping, drying and removing destroyed content the day after the storm hit. As with most disaster recovery projects this particular project had unique challenges as far as obtaining the proper equipment and fuel. Our in-house resources enabled NRE to more quickly staff and mobilize equipment and fuel, getting the job done and clients back to normal faster and more efficiently than our competitors.
Prior to Sandy, NewRoads performed post-hurricane Katrina work throughout southern Florida for numerous commercial clients helping our clients return their operating business back to normal.

MICROBIAL REMEDIATION

Exposure to mold can cause a number of health issues. Because of this and other mold-related insurance claims, concerns about mold and indoor air quality have elevated dramatically. Although mold remediation guidelines are not as highly regulated as asbestos, some states instituted engineering controls throughout the removal process. NewRoads Environmental has adopted these principals and put them to use on remediation projects in occupied mold-contaminated office space, banks, hospitals, hotels and retail facilities. A major differentiator for NewRoads is that once mold contaminated materials are removed and or de-contaminated, NewRoads has the ability to “rebuild” or “put back” the materials including finish plaster and paint. Our clients have found a real value in our ability to provide this kind of complete service package.

INDUSTRIAL DECONTAMINATION

Industrial decontamination is required during factory upgrades, path of new construction work or property transfers. NewRoads is able to provide decontamination services for industrial clients that include polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB’s) contamination, TSCA-level metal contamination, radiological contamination, mercury, chrome, pesticides and a host of other environmental concerns. each project having its own challenges regarding methods of removal/decontamination, proper personal protective equipment and waste characterization and disposal. NRE has the resources, equipment and disposal facilities to handle each industrial decontamination need. Recently NewRoads completed the industrial decontamination of a 5,000,000SF operating national defense facility which presented challenges both with managing the contaminants and coordinating the work in an operating facility. In addition to industrial services the management of NewRoads Environmental completed the abatement of all asbestos containing materials as part of the first decommissioning /demolition of an atomic power plant in the United States. The abatement of the asbestos containing material was completed over a seven-month period during the “cold and dark” phase of the plant decommissioning. Over 2,000 cubic yards of cross contaminated materials were removed, properly packaged and transported from the project site. NRE continues to provide services to the nuclear power industry during schedule plant shut downs. NRE has the experience and knowledge to provide our services during these scheduled shutdowns within the shortened time frame typically associated with this type of work.

PCB REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL

The presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) in building related materials is an emerging environmental health concern. Because of their insulating and non-flammable properties PCB’s have been widely used in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications including electrical equipment, surface coatings, inks, adhesives, flame retardants and paints. In 1979 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the commercial application of PCB’s citing health and environmental concerns. PCB’s persist in the environmental and are highly unreactive and largely resistant to breakdown.
NewRoads Environmental has been on the forefront of this emerging concern and has performed numerous projects working with both federal and state agencies remediating PCB’s in soil, building components and industrial surface contamination. Proper personnel protective equipment and training is required when performing PCB remediation. All PCB contaminated waste is regulated by the EPA through the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) and must be disposed of properly.
